Looking Back At Old Images

While looking back through my Lightroom catalog at photos I took last year I found a few pictures that I had previously completely dismissed and while not great, are better than I remembered.

I also found some images that I hadn’t previously shared but had started processing. I think the reason I hadn’t shared them was because of over processing which had completely ruined them. One of the things I have learned from shooting film over the last few months is that post processing should be kept to a minimum.

In a future post I will share some examples of photos from last year without processing, with last years processing and then reprocessed this year.

  1. … I shall keep an eye out for that future post!

I read a thing the other day about disconnecting yourself from your images by not looking at them for a prolonged period of time after you shoot them. It is supposed to remove the emotional attachment and leave you with a better idea of the objective merits. Of course, it’s supposed to be about weeding out bad photos, rather than finding good ones, but I do wonder, considering some of the things you are said about your emotional response to your work lately, if there is something to think about there…?

    1. Thanks Hamish.

There is definitely something to it, I think I’ve read something similar too. I also think that when I first see my photos I’m overly critical and dismiss photos too easily. When I come back to the photos a lot later I am more relaxed about them and see them diffrently.

      1. Yeah… When you were talking about it the other day, it sounded like you were being harsh on yourself. I think I’m quite lucky really, as much as I moan about it as a profession, doing it for work for other people has made me very relaxed about my own work!
Having no one else to impress just makes things easier… I suppose you gotta ask yourself who you are trying to impress. If the answer is no one, then your probably just being mean to yourself 😉
